GOOD ENEMY
A father finds that escaping his past means leaving behind his daughter as well. When Howard surprises his college-aged daughter with a visit, he is forced to face the truth of their relationship and the rift between them — one caused by Howard’s hesitance to confront memories of his past as a young man in China. Weaving together two generations and two continents each experiencing massive social changes, Good Enemy examines the strength of human connections, affirming that no one lives an “ordinary” life, no matter how hard they might try.
Good Enemy is an Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund Commission. The off-Broadway premiere was produced at Minetta Lane Theater as part of Audible Theater's 22/23 season. Directed by Chay Yew, the cast features Frances Jue, Ron Domingo, Tim Liu, Geena Quintos, Alec Silver, Ryan Spahn, and Jeena Yi. Reviews
“Good Enemy” has a serious mind, an inventive spirit and a goofball heart... a mélange of a play - about oppression and democracy, cowardice and bravery, love and loneliness. Mostly, though, it is about getting a second chance, and being wise enough to grab it. - New York Times
The world premiere of "Good Enemy" is captivating in every way, from its rounded portrayals and clear staging to its momentous story and message of the importance of human connection... Don't miss it. - DC Theater Arts
"Good Enemy" is a handsomely produced world premiere of a play that is gripping, heartbreaking, and undeniably important. - TheaterMania
The play was beautifully written... "Good Enemy" intermingles the age old tale and trial of two generations, two continents, worlds apart in their values, yearning to find common ground for the greater good of all. - The Knockturnal
"Good Enemy" is a play which illustrates all of the deep emotions tied to simply being human: love, yearning, shame, fear, and hope. It has the power to transform even the most indifferent of hearts. It is perhaps the most visceral expression of the American immigrant and refugee experience... it’s powerful and unifying. - Tawk of New Yawk
In "Good Enemy", playwright Yilong Liu manages his two-track plot with undeniable verve. - Lighting & Sound America
"Good Enemy"... is one-part political thriller, one-part father-daughter reconciliation drama, and one-part sentimental road-trip comedy... the playwright, Yilong Liu, has a unique voice and is an artist worth following. - Talking' Broadway
A young man’s inability to stay quiet in tumultuous times versus the intentional silence of his later years provides the time-jumping tension in "Good Enemy", an often gripping new drama by Chinese-born playwright Yilong Liu. Spanning two countries and 37 years, the work brings fresh urgency to the 1980’s aftermath of China’s Cultural Revolution. - Front Row Center
Liu is an expert storyteller. - The Wrap
